We all know how important a good skincare routine is at home. You even dig deep every night and wash your face no matter how tired you are. Even if you have the greatest at home routine, though, your skin needs more. Getting routine facials is the only way to keep your skin healthy by addressing its changing needs. Call Texas Laser and Aesthetics in Austin, TX and let us help you decide which facial will be right for you.
Why Are Facials Important?
We like to think of getting a facial as much like getting your teeth cleaned, except really relaxing and soothing. You brush and floss your teeth at home, but you know you need to see a professional to keep your teeth healthy. The same is true of your skin. Your skin is constantly subjected to the pollutants in your environment. Whatever is in your air, like pollen, humidity, dust and snow, is pelted into your skin.
We think it’s a good idea to get a facial at least every season or every three months. Your skin has different needs throughout the year as the weather, your diet and your stress levels change. Whenever your skin just looks like it needs something extra, you need a professional to tend to your skin. Some people may need to visit more often.
What Sort of Facials Are Right for You?
Deciding which facial is right for you can be a daunting task. Many skincare centers offer an array of treatments, and it’s difficult to decide on the perfect one for you. It’s always a good idea to know what your skin type is, and you can go from there. There are five major skin types:
Once you know your skin type, you can be a little wiser as you choose your skincare products and your facial treatments.
Normal Skin Type
As the title suggests, if you have normal skin you wouldn’t describe your skin as oily, dry or sensitive. If you do have bouts of those symptoms, they’re fleeting and don’t cause you much issue. Your pore size is small and you rarely have breakouts. Your tone will be mostly even without shine or dry, cracked areas.
Even normal skin types have their issues. Normal skin doesn’t mean perfect skin. You will shed dry and dull skin cells that could create issues for you if not properly exfoliated.
Treatments to Consider
You’ll want to keep your pores and skin clear without drying or adding heavy creams or oils. Look for balancing treatments and talk to us about any current concerns you have like diet changes, unusual stress or upcoming events.
Dry Skin Type
If you have dry skin, you may often feel a tightness in your face. You can even develop scaly or flaky patches. You don’t have issues with large pores because yours are almost invisible. Because your skin is constantly dry, you may deal with frequent bouts of irritation and even premature wrinkling.
Dry skin may have a genetic component to it, so it’s nothing you did that caused this skin type. Your skin may just naturally produce less sebum than other skin types. You need to avoid harsh cleansers and invest in a good moisturizing cream because they contain oils. Creams with oils are more likely to penetrate your dermis.
Treatments to Consider
You’ll definitely want a consultation to discuss your specific areas of concern. You’ll want to consider mild exfoliation with an immediate infusion of rich serums and moisturizers. There are great treatments that are gentle but still pack a hydration punch.
Oily Skin Type
This skin type is notorious for producing a high shine that can lead to severe breakouts. There are several factors that cause oily skin. The first is genetic. Some people are just predisposed to produce more sebum than others. Hormones also play a role as they fluctuate throughout your lifetime. Excess oil travels from the hair follicle, up the hair and to the surface of your skin from your pores.
When excess oil mixes with the bacteria on your skin, this causes breakouts. You probably deal with visible white and blackheads often. Soon after cleansing, your skin may become shiny, and if you wear makeup, you find that it slides off quickly. Don’t try to “dry” your skin out. When you use harsh astringents, this signals your oil glands to produce even more oil. Treat your skin gently and don’t use heavy creams, but don’t skip the moisturizer or you’ll produce even more oil.
Treatments to Consider
For you, exfoliation and extractions are important. Infusing your skin with appropriate hydration and treatments that shrink your pores are always good ideas, too. We’ll work with you to develop the right facial for your oily skin.
Combination Skin Type
As the name implies, if this is your skin type you’ll have areas that produce more oil than you’d like and other areas that will be extra dry. This is the most common skin type but can also be the most challenging to treat. You may produce too much shine in your t-zone but have dry cheeks. Resist the temptation to slather heavy creams everywhere or dry out your whole face because doing either will make both conditions worse.
Instead, opt for plant-based products that can both calm and soothe while effectively cleansing and exfoliating. We’re happy to recommend products that help you manage all parts of your combination skin.
Treatments to Consider
A great overall cleansing but gentle facial will treat all areas of your combination skin without irritating or inflaming it. Soothing serums will be important for you and finishing with a calming product will even out your complexion.
Sensitive Skin Types
If you have this skin type, you may be very confused at times. You can exhibit the characteristics of combination, dry or oily skin while also dealing with a lot of irritation, redness and inflammation. This skin type is the most likely to have rosacea and skin allergies, so it’s important for you to choose mild products and always do a skin test before applying anything to your whole face.
Treatments to Consider
It’s important to talk to us about what kinds of sensitivity you experience. We have great treatments that can calm and soothe sensitive skin while effectively and gently exfoliating and extracting.
Facials and Skin Types
Dermaplaning is a popular way to exfoliate all the dead skin cells and peach fuzz from your face. It’s done by using a medical-grade scalpel held at a 90-degree angle and gently scraped over your skin.
It might sound intimidating, but it’s amazing. We all walk around with a barrier of dead skin cells, dirt, debris and peach fuzz on our faces. This barrier will make your skin look dull and lifeless, and it will also keep your skin products from working as promised.
What to Expect
We’ll start your facial by performing dermaplaning. We do this first because once that barrier is removed, the products we use afterward will be completely absorbed and highly effective. When you leave this facial, you will immediately have a brighter complexion. Your skin will have a more even tone and texture and look more vibrant than ever.
A common myth is that if your peach fuzz is shaved off it will somehow grow back darker or thicker. We just take the top off, so whatever your peach fuzz was like before, that is exactly how it will grow back. This facial is a great choice for all skin types.
Microneedling is also called collagen induction therapy, and it involves using a hand-held device filled with hair-thin needles. This device is gently passed over the skin, creating micro-channels. Your body perceives these small micro-perforations as injuries, though they won’t look or feel like it. Your body increases production of collagen to heal these micro-injuries from the inside out.
This helps to address fine lines and wrinkles or acne scarring. As collagen builds, the middle layer of your skin becomes stronger and smoother. This works to fill in acne scars and lines. When you add a nourishing facial afterward, you are amping up your results.
What to Expect
When you arrive, we’ll apply a numbing cream on your face to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the process. Once your face is numb, we’ll run the microneedling device across your skin, ensuring that we’re addressing all your concerns. After this part of your session, we’ll move into a facial. A huge benefit of microneedling is how well facial products work afterward.
These products will have a direct line to the middle layer of your skin. We’ll choose nutrient-rich products that are part of a customized facial to address your skin type. This works really well on dry skin that is prematurely showing wrinkles. Oily skin benefits from this facial because collagen helps to shrink pores, making them less likely to become inflamed and break out.
This is excellent for all skin types, though some sensitive skin types may find this too irritating or triggering.
This is the new kid on the block as far as facials are concerned, and it’s a powerhouse getting rave reviews everywhere. If you’re looking for a transformative facial, this is it. HydraFacial uses a patented Vortex technology every step of the way. This technology uses spiral tips on a vacuum wand that delivers serums and creates a vortex that dislodges and removes impurities while hydrating simultaneously.
A signature HydraFacial uses its 3-step process to produce a glowing and rejuvenated complexion. This facial will use a wand that has removable tips to perform different functions.
Cleanse + Peel
We’ll manually cleanse your skin before we apply the Vortex technology. Then we’ll use the wand with the exfoliating tip to gently resurface the skin. This is all done with water and serums, so this doesn’t harm the skin.
Extract + Hydrate
Another tip will be added to remove all the debris in your pores with painless suction. As everything is removed from your pores, the Vortex then infuses your skin with intense hydration delivered deep into the skin.
Fuse + Protect
Now that your pores are clear and your skin softened, we infuse your skin with antioxidants and peptides that calm, soothe and protect your newly resurfaced complexion.
