At Texas Laser and Aesthetics in Austin, TX, we understand the toll wind, sun, emissions, and other pollutants take on facial skin. In Texas, we work hard, play harder, and sometimes forget to care for our skin. Unfortunately, that neglect can lead to signs of premature aging and the need for injectables.
Injectables is a nebulous term that can refer to any fat removal, muscle relaxing, or anti-aging medication that can be injected via syringe. At Texas Laser and Aesthetics in Austin, TX, we offer several dermal fillers to meet any and all of our clients’ needs. Keep reading to help you determine which formulations are right for you.
The Ultimate Guide to Injectables
Of all our injectables, Juvederm Ultra may be the most popular. This hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler is used to add dramatic volume to the lips. While other dermal fillers offer results that only last a year, the results of Juvederm Ultra will easily last you 18 to 24 months before you need a follow-up treatment.
Juvederm Volbella is another injectable designed to add volume to your lips. This revolutionary, FDA-approved dermal filler can be used to add subtle volume to the lips and treat mild-to-moderate smile lines, smoker’s lines, or marionette lines around the mouth. This particular injectable filler is more commonly used to correct asymmetry than Juvederm Ultra.
Juvederm Vollure is the ideal injectable for you if your marionette lines are too deep to be treated by Juvederm Volbella. In fact, we often use Volbella to add subtle volume to the lips and correct mild-to-moderate marionette lines while using Vollure to tackle the deepest marionette lines and deep nasolabial folds that run from the corners of your mouth to your nose.
But Vollure isn’t just the perfect complement to Volbella because it is “stronger.” It is also the perfect complement because it is just as durable. Both dermal fillers last 18 months, so scheduling follow-up treatments is a breeze.
Juvederm Voluma is the ideal injectable for you if you wish to re-contour your cheeks without the need for an invasive medical procedure. As with the rest of the Juvederm line, the results of Juvederm Voluma will last roughly two years and make you look at least five years younger.
However, this isn’t just the right injectable for you if you want to re-contour the underlying structure of your cheeks. It can also be used to add volume to sunken, hollow, or gaunt cheeks and lift and tighten loose skin. Therefore, this may be the ideal injectable for you if you have lost a lot of fat in your cheeks due to illness or drastic weight loss.
Restylane Silk is unique in that it was the first dermal filler specifically designed and FDA-approved to augment the lips and smooth the wrinkles around the mouth. This may be the right injectable for you if you are at least 21 years of age and you want to try out lip augmentation and see if you like it. Unlike the Juvederm product line, the results of Restylane only last six months.
Restylane-L is Restylane’s answer to Juvederm Vollure. Like Vollure, it is designed and FDA-approved to treat the deepest nasolabial folds and creases and marionette lines. It is often combined with Restylane Silk to perfect the lips and skin around the mouth.
Unlike Vollure, it is also designed to smooth away deep wrinkles and furrow lines on the forehead and between the eyebrows. When treating the forehead and nasolabial folds, the results last around 18 months. When treating marionette lines, the results last around 13.5 months because the mouth is much more dynamic than the forehead and nose.
Restylane Refyne is similar to Restylane Silk. It is used to smooth marionette lines and nasolabial folds and is manufactured using Restylane’s patented cross-linking technology. This leads to incredibly dramatic results easily lasting 18 months. The best part is you can still enjoy your normal full range of expressions. They just won’t trigger deeper lines.
Restylane Defyne, like Restylane Refyne, is a dermal filler designed to smooth away moderate-to-severe smile lines and nasolabial folds. There are two primary differences between these two formulations. First, the results of Defyne only last around 12 to 15 months. Second, Refyne is only designed to treat mild-to-moderate lines, wrinkles, and folds.
Restylane Lyft is a versatile injectable. It is safe and effective for the treatment of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. However, it may also be used to volumize, re-contour, and lift the cheeks, fill in sunken temples, and act as a non-invasive nose job. This dermal filler can truly do it all.
How to Prepare for Dermal Filler Injections
Determine if You Are a Good Candidate
The first step in preparing for your dermal filler injections is determining if you are a good candidate for treatment. There are several factors, including your medical history, current health, current aesthetic, and desired aesthetic we need to consider. In general, we look for adults who are physically healthy, don’t smoke, and who have a positive outlook and realistic expectations.
To determine if you are a good candidate for dermal filler injections, and figure out which formulations are right for you, you need to come in for an initial consultation. During this initial consultation, we will also provide you with a comprehensive set of instructions for preparation and recovery. Finally, we will discuss what you can expect during the treatment process.
Understand the Treatment
Part of being a good candidate for dermal filler injections is to have realistic expectations about the treatment itself. Before each treatment, we will sanitize the treatment area with an alcohol-based cleanser. This eliminates the possibility of an infection. Then, we will clearly mark the injection points. Finally, we will make the injections.
Treatment sessions usually take only three to 15 minutes to complete. This is because there is no need for local anesthesia or a topical numbing cream. The Juvederm and Restylane formulations we use include lidocaine, an injectable anesthetic. If you are allergic to lidocaine, let us know and we can accommodate your allergy.
We strongly encourage our clients to stop smoking before their dermal filler injections. First, cigarettes contain nicotine, which is a chemical compound that elevates blood pressure by constricting blood vessels. Second, nicotine destroys the collagen in your skin that keeps it looking young, hydrated, healthy, and radiant.
Third, nicotine slows the collagen production process. Unfortunately, one of the reasons dermal fillers are so effective is they encourage your skin to produce more collagen. If you smoke in the six weeks leading up to your treatment, your results will not be as satisfactory. Your satisfaction is important to us. Put down the cigarettes and don’t pick them back up.
What to Expect After Treatment
One of the most compelling benefits of this type of anti-aging treatment is its lack of a recovery period or downtime. While you can mostly go back to your daily routine after treatment, there are a few steps you should take to ensure stellar, lasting results. Here’s what you need to know:
No Alcohol for 24 Hours
For the best results, it is important to avoid alcohol in the first 24 hours after treatment. This ensures that your blood pressure remains within a normal range, your blood doesn’t thin, you stay hydrated, and essential nutrients aren’t flushed out of your body. It also ensures that the nutrients in your body will make it to the treatment area with ease.
No High-Intensity Exercise
Another important post-treatment care step is to avoid any strenuous exercise during the first 24 hours after treatment. Again, this ensures that your blood pressure remains stable. If you’re not sure what counts as high-intensity exercise, ask your primary care physician.
An excellent rule of thumb is you should avoid any activity that raises your heart rate to between 50 and 85% of its maximum rate. To calculate your maximum heart rate, subtract your age from 220 beats per minute. If you are 30, your maximum heart rate is 190 beats per minute. Half of that is 95 beats per minute.
No Excess Heat and Sun Exposure
Another crucial post-treatment step you must take is avoiding excessive heat that could lead to sweating. This means that you should not take a steaming hot bath or shower within 24 hours of treatment. You should also avoid dry saunas and steam rooms that may cause you to sweat. Do your best to keep the treatment area dry, although a quick shower is okay.
You should do your best to avoid excessive unprotected sun exposure for the rest of your life. Cancel your regularly scheduled tanning bed appointments and stop sunbathing. Both the sun and tanning beds emit harmful UVA and UVB rays that prematurely age the skin and damage existing collagen. Try to limit time spent outside between 10 AM and 4 PM and wear sunscreen.
No Multi-Vitamins or Fish Oil Supplements
In the first seven days after treatment, it is important to stop taking anything that can thin the blood. The most commonly taken medications on this list are NSAIDs, MAOIs, and corticosteroids. However, there are also certain nutritional supplements you must stop taking for a week after treatment. These include vitamins E and K and fatty acid supplements.
What to Expect From the Results
One of the most critical steps in determining which dermal filler formulations are right for you is clearly articulating your desired results. We will discuss your desired results during your initial consultation and explain to you thoroughly the results you can realistically expect from each injectable.
While results vary on a case-by-case basis, you can look through before-and-after photos of clients who looked similar to you before treatment and sought similar goals to help you decide which formulations you should choose. Regardless of the fillers you choose, you will see initial results immediately after treatment. Then, results will improve for four to six weeks.
